Certification for Catholic School Teachers
Religion Teacher Certification, for teachers of Religion in a catholic school, is the official recognition by the Diocese of Richmond through the Office of Catholic Schools that a teacher has participated in formation to enhance one's knowledge and skills as a Religion teacher.
Preliminary Certification (Required):
- Teachers new to teaching Religion must complete Pathways: Delivered and an additional seven hours of ongoing formation hours during the first year.
- Pathways: Delivered training consists of three separate courses: Vocation of the Catechist, Catholic Approach to Scripture, and Catholic Tradition. All three courses need to be completed to receive credit for the training.
Pathways Delivered - Tier 1
All parish catechists and school religion teachers are expected to complete this training within their first year of service. The estimated time of completion is 4-5 hours. Included in Tier 1 is the following 3 courses:
- Vocation of the Catechist
- Catholic Approach to Scripture
- Catholic Tradition

Following the first year of teaching:
- Teachers of Religion are required to submit 10 hours of approved catechetical formation each year to achieve further certification levels.
- Certification levels include Intermediate, Advanced, Master, and Professional certification.
- Approved catechetical formation includes formation experiences from workshops or in-service opportunities provided by offices in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, parishes, or schools. Please check with your school's Religion Coordinator to gain approval for activities you desire to participate in.
